I mentioned that I use a magnet to cover the vent in my basement, which makes the basement chilly but ideal for storing extra food. When I started blogging in 2006, I was reading mostly personal finance blogs and wanted to be more of a stockpile grocery shopper. However, I lived in a 333 square foot studio apartment where storage space was a premium and I knew I would be moving within a year. Instead, I used coupons and shopped as frugally as I could and said one day I will live in a space where I can have a stockpile.
That day has come. I now have shelves in the basement where I can store extra paper goods (sometimes given to me by my gramma who loves to find a bargain) and dry goods. I am storing the ingredients for several make-ahead meals I like. The good thing is the basement is on the same level as my garage so I can pull into the garage and if my groceries are packed correctly, can leave all but frozen foods in the basement. Then, come back and sort between stockpile and kitchen. Less lugging items up and down the stairs!

January 21, 2010 at 11:46 amI like to stockpile stuff too when it is on sale like canned goods and paper goods. It was miserable when we were renting because we had no basement and limited room. Now I have a decent sized pantry but I still have a couple of shelves in the basement.

January 23, 2010 at 10:31 amLove the idea of leaving most of your groceries in the basement as you come in from shopping. This is brilliant! Now if I only had a garage… I have started buying multiples of some cosmetic items like flossers for our teeth, toothpaste and deodorant. They are small and don’t take up much space in my tiny linen storage cabinet. It definitely saves me at least 1 or 2 shopping trips a month this way.

January 24, 2010 at 10:12 pmWow. Love how organized it looks. I have been stockpiling more lately. Actually just cleaned out our pantry this weekend and found I had like 9 cans of black beans… who needs that many cans of black beans?? LOL.

January 25, 2010 at 11:37 amLaura, even spares of H&B helps because then you’re less likely to be caught short of deodorant or soap. Plus, I like finding the clearance areas at the store and using coupons for a better deal!
Shannan, I have to be organized so I do not feel out of sorts. Being a basement, I want to enjoy it the best one can enjoy a cement basement, you know?
