Make It: Laundry Detergent

Homemade Laundry Detergent
Originally uploaded by udandi

My coworker, FM, gave me a sample of her laundry detergent along with the recipe, because this costs about 3 cents per load. Just a note, she will be changing the soap to make for a more green recipe.

1/3 bar Fels Naptha Soap
½ cup Washing Soda
½ cup Borax Powder

Grate Soap and put in sauce pan.
Add 6 cups water and heat until the soap melts.
Add Washing Soda and Borax stir until dissolved.
Remove from heat.
Pour 4 cups hot water in bucket.
Add soap mixture and stir.
Add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir.
Let sit for 24 hours.

Use ½ cup per load.

This is a really great idea. I do have a question though. What is ‘washing soda’? Where can it be purchased?

Hi ms bart, thanks for stopping by! Arm & Hammer makes washing soda and you should be able to find it at your grocery store.
