I’m very excited to partner with Verizon Wireless to Host the Verizon Wireless Move More Challenge
It’s week three of the Verizon Move More Challenge and I’m thrilled and encouraged by all your responses of what you planned to do to add more activity to your day!
Did you do it? Are you walking, biking, hiking, running, playing around indoors, Zumba, and more? Let me know in the comments.
As for me, if Fitbit and I had to declare our relationship on Facebook it would read It’s Complicated.
The idea is to MOVE MORE and I want to, but I was focused on steps because Fitbit says my friends are wearing out the pavement. I want to be like them!
The activities I engage in (indoor cycling, high intensity interval training, boot camp, yoga) do not seem to produce the same steps as good old walking. On my 15-minute break I can log about 1500 steps circling the parking lot. A 45-minute indoor cycling class logs about 1500-2000. It stands to reason, my arms are usually holding the handlebar and not swinging like you do when walking. And when my palms are planted on the ground for mountain climbers, I’m not registering any steps because my legs are moving, not my arms.
Finally, I had to put on my polyester coaches shorts and give myself a better game plan. The Fitbit app offers plenty of information beyond steps, like active minutes and syncs with MyFitnessPal to track my workouts.
For example, this week (my weeks start on Sunday) I’ve already logged more workout minutes than the week before. I may not be at the top of the leader board for steps, but my heart and muscles are still getting the workout they need, I’m enjoying my workouts, and I’m giving myself permission to achieve personal, sustainable, not one-size-fits-all goals.
Don’t forget to leave me a comment and let me know what you’re doing or what you’ve learned about yourself and your workouts so far in this challenge!
The Verizon Wireless Move More Challenge (Official Rules) runs from January 5 to March 31, 2015 and open to all my friends and readers in OH, PA, WV, KY, MI, IN, ND, SD, MN, IA, NE, IL and WI who are interested in adding more activity in their lives. Each comment left on my blog posts will serve as entry in the final drawing for one of three Fitbit Charge from Verizon Wireless. If you want to get social, tag your posts with #MoveMoreVZW so I can find them.

January 20, 2015 at 9:48 pmThe step issue is a struggle for me with the fitbit. Although it encourages me to take more steps during the day it makes me want to run instead of doing strength or other cardio in order to hit my step goal.

January 23, 2015 at 8:11 amI am only a few weeks post partum but I have been taking long walks carrying my newborn in a carrier. I can feel it in my back so I know I’m working some muscles! I plan to ramp things up in a few weeks! As always, I’m so impressed with your fit lifestyle!

January 26, 2015 at 8:40 amI am so excited to be following you on this. I have been moving more. And I finally got new shoes. 🙂 We have been skiing and I wonder what the fitbit would say about that. I am SORE the next day. 🙂

February 6, 2015 at 9:54 amHaha. I looked up the steps for skiing and found this pdf. It is very interesting. I guess skiing does count for steps. https://www.ghc.edu/committees/wellness/conversion.pdf

March 22, 2015 at 9:49 pmI walk the steps at the job instead of the elevator. Gets my 10,0 00 in daily.

March 23, 2015 at 12:45 pmYes, I stayed true to my goal of walking the stairs vs. taking the elevator. Even after a week of vacation, it was easy to make the transition back to taking 7-8 flights of stairs.

March 23, 2015 at 4:42 pmThanks for your recommendations about post work out snacks. I have been brining a cheese stick and an apple and it’s been so far so good. After I move it, I am HUNGRY!

March 26, 2015 at 11:47 amI’m pretty sure if I was using a tracker right now my steps wouldn’t be extremely high – I’m home with the kiddos, this week has been too chilly for running, but I have stayed committed to my workouts 3-4 times a week. Pretty proud of that!

March 30, 2015 at 12:13 pmI was considering signing up for a bootcamp this week. #scary! I wonder how many steps that will count for. You know I am sweating this fitbit pretty hard! haha. #punintended!
