Remember how nice my basement looked after it was power washed and painted? Now, imagine it with rivers of a silty rain water headed to the drain and an earthworms buffet. That’s what happens when you have an outside stairwell drain that cannot handle a heavy rain and it floods in under the door that leads to the basement.
Thankfully, my parents live nearby and have enough tools to run a rental shop for daughters who are new homeowners and have few (or no such tools). Nothing like spending the middle of the night squeegee water and shoveling worms out the door. Next up, snaking a drain!
Last week, I learned to re-install the garbage disposal that was not properly attached by the previous owners and dropped out while preparing my week’s meals. Just think, the convenience of being able to wash your shoes with dirty dish water while standing at your kitchen sink. At least the kitchen floor got a good scrub down after that!
Naturally, people say ah the joys of homeownership and after living in an apartment where it took the landlord a week to decide if my broken fridge would be replaced (and more time waiting on a replacement), I am still happy the check I write each month is to a mortgage company, rather than a landlord. The messes are mine to fix and the improvements are mine to enjoy!
I better call a tree trimmer before the one in the backyard comes crashing through the roof. See you in another month or so with the next house update!

March 29, 2010 at 10:52 pmBummer about the new home disasters but a big Ya-hoo! for being able to borrow the tools you need to fix it!
I snaked our drains recently. It was easy and kinda cool. The stuff that came out of the clogged drain? Beyond gross.

March 30, 2010 at 9:44 pmThere’s nothing worse than feeling like you have to buy an expensive tool that you will probably only use once a year. So, hooray for friends and family! When I was living alone in my first house, I used to hire this random guy on my street for random tasks like trimming trees. It was all good until he absolutely destroyed one of my trees. It was so bad my neighbors actually waited on their porches for me to come home so they could console me when I saw it and flipped out. Ah, the joys of home ownership.

March 30, 2010 at 10:03 pmI do this type of stuff now and I rent. I have unclogged my sinks and today I sprayed for ants. Maybe that means I am ready for home ownership! 🙂
