Free Stuff: One DVD Rental from Redbox

Since the library fills my DVD fix, I do not use Netflix or pay attention to the Redbox DVD rentals boxes at the grocery stores. Redbox rents limited newly released titles for $1 a night with no late fees, it just keeps charing your credit card an additional dollar for each night you have the movie out.

If you enter your email at the Redbox web site, you will be sent a promo code to get one free DVD rental. Or if you go to Redbox Codes to find code or Inside Redbox is a little bit more fancy with codes listed when they were last used, percentage of success and by state.

The one thing that worries me about these machines is that they would be out of order the day I intend to return the movie and I either would have to drive to another location to return it or eat the extra costs. I am sure customer service is used to customers trying to skirt late-day charges with this claim, having records showing that a service call has been made on the out-of-order machine.

Best I can tell from the other titles released today, the library might be my best bet for getting the Jennifer Lopez produced Feel the Noise, which was released today :) I might save my free promo for next Tuesday and see what is released. By the way, the promo codes are not valid with online rental/reservations.

If you use Redbox, let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Book Review: Scrapbooking books

Pretty much any craft book that I find in any of the three library systems I use, I check out. Yes, I work at one library and still frequent others because the collections vary. For example, my favorite book about scrapbooks is still Scrap City, but only one library system has the book in its collection.

My sister lends me her Creating Keepsakes magazines so I have recently reviewed all of the 2007 issues and noticed that CK is almost equal parts content to advertisements and the content they do provide is on the thin side, in my opinion. But I am a tough sell, if I am spending my money on something I want some serious bang for the buck!

When I first started scrapbooking 10 years ago, it was more like photo collages. I look at my first book and now think what a hot mess! But everyone evolves. Plus, I ran across a relic in the collection, Becky Higgin's The Art of Creative Lettering. It was published in 1999 and made me realize even the pros have some skeletons in their crafting closet. This book is so hokey it is a good example of why people used to think scrapbooking was "kountry kool."

My thing with any scrapbook magazine or book published in the last few years is wanting to know how to use products and techniques for how they arrived at the finished layout. There are plenty of web sites with posted layouts if I just want to browse and not learn any techniques or if I want to keep making stuff like I did 10 years ago! But a book like Focal Point: New Page Ideas And Techniques to Showcase Your Favorite Photos, which is divided up by techniques and explains how to use packing tape transfers, blender pens (xylene), printing on iron-on transfer paper then iron it to textured paper and various other ideas is right up my alley!

I one I used to not include was journaling, I only put captions. Now it is not just about slapping the photos of a life event onto a page, it is about photos and stories that capture all the moments in life. Which is why I can see the appeal of books like Toddlerhood: Scrapbooking Your Childs Early Years that remind readers to scrapbook a page about little one sitting with grandpa, doing her bedtime routine or a favorite toy. If it seems like it is too much to be able to scrapbook all the routines moments of life along with the bigs ones, while making every page look magazine publishing-worthy, then maybe the books from Cathy Zielske and Simple Scrapbooks are for you. They show how-tos with tools and products along with the layout ideas, which are clean and simple. At least looking at books, you feel like you can crank out a few pages in a couple hours.

One last fun book I enjoyed was Making the Most of Your Scrapbook Supplies because who does not want to keep on using all that is in the craft stash rather than just the hot trendy item of the month?!

In my aStore, I added a bunch of other books I have already checked out or am on the library holds list. As I say, try before you buy, go to the library! Please note, if your library does not have the book, ask if there is no charge to get it through interlibrary loan (ILL) or if you can recommend a purchase. For all you know the librarian doing the ordering (or collection development as it is called) might share your interest ;) By the way, if the book is spiral bound, it is less likely to make into a library collection (because of how easily the pages can tear off).

Make It: Chocolate Chip cookies

It is that time of year when it is cold and blah and there is little to jazz me up. But today I was wearing my hand-crafted, bejeweled and well-loved "Let's Get Flyered Up" tee under my sweater at work and looking forward to the University of Dayton Flyers taking on their A-10 rivals, XU.

Not having cable, I had to hit up Cuz to watch it at his house, which means I have to take along the bevos and snacks! As one who likes to have a little sweet with my salty, I cranked up the mixer and made homemade chocolate chip cookies. When I said homemade, he said as in home sliced?! ha! I only made one sheet and then stored the rest in a container to serve up at a later date (because a few can be easily baked in the toaster oven). If you click through to my Flickr account, you can see my cookie scoop, which is another kitchen gadget I love behind my toaster oven and mixer!

The cookies and Kroger's Private Selection frozen pizza were a hit, but the same cannot be said about the Flyers.

Make It: Cupcake table runner

I made another table runner from two cupcake designed towels that are being sold at Target as part of their Valentine line. Just sew a wide grosgrain ribbon over the middle where the two towel meet.

I posted my Christmas table runner back in December.

This project took about 15 minutes (because I have to pull out my sewing machine and plug it in!) and I will probably make a few more throughout the year for gifts!

Make It: circle journal scrapbook

circle journal scrapbook
Originally uploaded by udandi.
Last weekend I attended my first scrap mania at a scrapbook store with my sister and her friends. I'm not much of a traditional scrapper, but it was fun! I bought an album and page protectors on clearance and some clear stamps that are happy hour themed!

As for this photo, I came up with the idea of a circle journal scrapbook for my high school friends. Although, it will not be a true circle journal because there are six of us and we are lucky if we get together monthly so this would take six months or more to complete and I am too anxious for that!

I am the self-appointed historian of our group because I am always taking photos, but I thought it would be fun if we all contributed to an album about our group. I divided a blank book in sections for each person and I started by posting photos and journaling about each friend. The next step is to have everyone else take some scrapbook sheets and complete at least one page about each other person (anything they want say - current or past memories) and give it back to me to put into that person's section. Then we can all gather around the journal and enjoy it as a group!

I just hope I can get all of them on board with the idea of doing something like this because I know a few of them will claim they are not creative. But it isn't creativity I am after, it is the memories!

Make It: Easy Framed Photos

I originally received this frame with different photos two years ago. I decided it was time to update it and since I had photos smaller than 5x7, I matted them on solid and then floral scrapbook paper to create a colorful background. very simple, but this way when I change the photos I'll be able to easily add these old ones into my scrapbooks!

Library newness!

BCPL - the dome
Originally uploaded by udandi.
The public library I work for opened a new location this weekend so I've posted my non-people, just places photos in Flickr. If I may toot our horn, it is a pretty cool place - the teen scene, the colorful children's area and all the browsing shelves in the adult section!

Also, I will be leading a book club that will read a little bit of everything in fiction and has a very cool name, Affictionados!

If you would like to follow along, the February pick is Bad Behavior of Belle Cantrell by Loraine Despres and the March book is The Camel Bookmobile by Masha Hamilton.

If you are in the Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky area and would like to join the group in person, email me for library details.

Deal: Skybus offers one-way fares for $20.08

Skybus is offering one-way fares for $20.08 (before taxes and fees) to ring in the New Year.

I checked it for flights out of Columbus, Ohio and while you can find those flights, they are not at the most desirable times, obviously, for flights during January and February.

The sale ends at midnight Saturday and you must book through the Skybus web site.
