Pre-Packaged Adult Lunch Combos

What ideas, tips or tricks do you use to help with lunch packing?

I had a coupon for a free adult lunch combo from Oscar Mayer so I picked one out.

Just looking at the nutritional information I knew I was making a mistake, 390 calories for this this and I’d probably eat a fruit or vegetable with it, plus probably another fruit or vegetable afternoon snack so I wouldn’t eat my arm at 3pm.

Not to mention much look at how much waste these combos create because each sandwich item is in shrink wrap packing, inside a plastic tray wrapped in a cardboard sleeve (not shown). What’s shown in the photo is just the trash from assembling the sandwich. Then, there was a jello cup, plastic spoon and snack bag wrapper.

But I understand the appeal of these products and I mentioned it on of the first articles I linked to (22 Healthy Lunch Ideas) when this blog was started. It’s not the nutrition, it’s the convenience but that’s where creating a lunch packing plan can help.

I build a salad in a baggie. I throw in the fixins first—some combination of olives, sliced hard boiled egg, cheese, nuts—then throw on the lettuce. When it’s lunchtime, I dump it out into a bowl and the good stuff is on top.

I remember surviving on these when I was working a night shift in a manufacturing plant during a summer between college years. It was a full 8 years before I could even look at sandwiches as real food again.

ahh! I worked in a factory my summers between college packing staples. I worked 10- or 12-hour shifts so I took a mini-cooler full of food and a jug of water (before everyone carried personal bottles of water).
