I probably should not admit that I have not be treating my beloved Madison Trestle desk from Target with the utmost love and care - I have been using a towel on it as my ironing board.
After reading through a variety of craft books at work about making your own household items like pot holders and tabletop ironing boards, I decided I needed to make mine.
At the fabric store, I explained what I wanted to make and the clerk point me to the Teflon (which I would have never found) and Insul-Brite, which I was aware of because I considered making my own lunchbag.
I bought 1/2 yard of Insul-Brite and sandwiched it between Teflon (1 yard). Using this measurements of this sandwich, I cut my cotton fabric and sewed three sides. Then, slipped in the Teflon/Insul-Brite sandwich, turned down the fabric and sewed the last side with the ribbon hanging out. When it is not in use, I tie it up and toss it in my fabric stash.
I showed this project to my mom and she’s requested one so she can iron on her laundry counter rather than haul out her ironing board.
I love solving my own needs with a few supplies and a couple spins on the sewing machine!

I also use a towel on the table for ironing. I don’t think I iron enough to need to make one of these, but it is really cute!

That is so cool. I’d love to go a step further on this & try to figure out how to make an ironing board cover for my standing board, since the covers you can buy are not so cute. But I’m pretty sure I’m not there yet (as a seamstress…. with the elastic & all…)

Gayle, most of the ironing I do is for sewing! I make every effort to avoid ironing clothes - ha!
Deana, I think you could use your old cover as your pattern to make a new one and since the elastic would be on the underside, it wouldn’t have to be too neat & pretty
