Question of the Day Marathon: Day 19
Welcome to the 19th day of JLP's Question of the Day Marathon!
Knitting, fly fishing, fronting a garage band, Irish Dancing, reading gossip mags, body building, wine tasting, attending sporting events or buying imported CDs...please tell me you have a hobby other than blogging from work! ;)
What is your hobby and how much money do you spend on it? Please indicate if that is a monthly or yearly figure.

Monday morning, I will do a random drawing of all commenters to send out a little package of marble magnets, hand stamped cards and a CD booklet. It isn't a book and it isn't a bill, it is udandi fun mail!
I look forward to your replies!

Great question Udandi :) I would say one of my hobbies is going to garage and estate sales. I collect cookbooks, vintage design/architecture books/magazines, and a few patterns of vintage Pyrex and Fire King. So far this year, we've spent $294.50 at garage/estate sales but that includes Rob's purchases as well as items I've bought for my parents and grandma.
Well, I have quite a few hobbies but the most expensive is skiing. A typical 1 day lift pass up here in the Northeast at one of the larger mountains can run upwards of $70. I try to balance this by going to the smaller / closer mountain near my house that during the week after work only costs about $15 for a 4 hour night pass.
Between tune ups, gas, and lift passes I probably spend close to $700 a year on it.
Other than collecting CDs, I really don't have a hobby at this point in my life. I have too many obligations on my time. If you count CDs as my hobby, I would say that I easily spend $200 - $300 per year.
Someday I would like to learn how to make furniture. I think this would be an expensive hobby.

Most expensive for me is Genealogy research. Online memberships, various records, and professional research it really adds up. Second would be buying books.
Film photography. Yes, I still use film. I even develop it myself in my kitchen. Film, developing chemicals, and other associated materials ends up costing a bunch.
I think my blog and under30honorroll.com are my hobbies ;) So far I've only spent about $80 on blog stuff, but probably more in the future.. I also buy a LOT of books but most of them come from the Half Price Books clearance section, so I'd say less than $200 per year on it.
I would have to say reading and cooking. I make good use of the library and only spend about $150/yr on books. Cooking is harder to estimate but we spend $75 a week on groceries and $650/yr on our CSA farm share.
Good question. I don't really (and I don't think many other people) think too much about how much they're spending if it's on something they love to do. That being said, I'd have to say my hobby is music. I come from a musically talented family. I can play guitar, bass guitar and drums. So far, I own 4 guitars, and a drumset. My guess is I'll spend $500-$600 a year on either new equipment or basic maintenance stuff for the equipment (strings, drum heads...etc).
I always seem to have a new hobby every few months, but the most consistent one is yoga. I spend about $60 on 5 classes and would like to take at least one class per week.
I'm also learning to speak french. (J'apprend le francais.) It cost $96 for this semester. It cost $110 for the book last semester but I can use the book for the first 4 classes, so it evens out ok.
I also make these cool bags. (You can check them out:) My mom taught me how to make them ($0) and also taught me how to be very frugal, ie. shop the clearance racks at the fabric stores. It costs about $10-15 for materials for each bag and that's because I like to buy the fancy beads and such that cost about $6-10 each!
I LOVE making things myself and giving them away as gifts. (I also like to receive them too.) It's personal, unique, and a gift of love and labor. My next project is to learn to make lavender oil/bath salts/etc. with all of the lavendar bushes in our backyard. Great question!

My hobby is running. I am not a natural athlete, but running is a sport that welcomes everyone. I've met many people and built my current "community" of friends from running. Even my bf/life partner and I met running!
I know that many people start running because it can actually be an inexpensive sport, but I get pulled in by all of the cute running tops and shorts. And training for races (I *heart* race day) makes me go through a lot of (not cheap) running shoes. Even signing up for races is expensive! (Especially if you're traveling internationally for them!).
No idea what I spend; I agree with commenter Matt that you don't really think about what you spend if it's something you love!
My only hobby right now is finding ways to eliminate my Credit Card Debt. After I do that I can devote more time to my true passion, being a couch potato
My two favorite hobbies take place during the summer- yard sales and the farmer's market. Of course they happen other times during the year but the summer is the best time for both. I usually go every weekend in June, July and August. I spend $10 at each place each weekend. I probably spend $300 a year for both things, including random weekends in fall and spring.
Ours is walking and hiking in the Sierras and nearby mountains. It isn't terribly expensive once you buy your gear; we probably spent about $1500 on our gear over the years, and a few dozen bucks on gas every trip.
hobbies? mine is learning french. cost? $40 a week for 2 hours with a french tutor. i have other things which are activities, like hiking, skiing, mountain biking, reading, snowshoeing, backpacking.
Yoga is my hobby.
I could go to classes everyday.
I pool resources with about 8 to 10 women and we hire a personal trainer, who is a yoga expert.
Her hourly rate is $65, but split by 10 women, we pay a lot less for a class with an expert.
It's a great workout and it helps with relaxation and with the cramps in my hand from blogging.
My hobby would have to be my bass guitar. I just bought one again and that cost me under $300. I probably won't spend any more money on it until I need to get another one. Unless, I join a band and I need a bigger amp ;)
My hobbies are most times varied and sporadic. My more regular ones: EverQuest II, most basic subscription is $14.99 a month. I've been doing yoga once a week and that costs $13 a class ($52 a month). My one a day Sudoku calendar was a gift, so that hobby is free year round! :)
I have a lot of activities that I like to do but I wouldnt call them hobbies. I think the closest thing to a hobby would be texas holdem poker. I played online for a while but I havent for a long time now. When I used to play I didnt spend more than $200 bucks on it.
Good question!
My main hobby is writing fiction. It's pretty much free, unless you count the $10 or so every other month when it's my turn to provide food and drinks for my writing group.
Aw, vices, hobbies, I'm not going to have any secrets by the time this month is up!
Ditto on the reading [approximately 200-300 annually], the scrapbooking is on hiatus because it's too expensive, travel occasionally [varies], riding rarely [costs almost $50/lesson now], and exercise of any sort that I can fit in [the odd hike or walk are free, the yoga is about $10/lesson].
I love to play basketball, especially with my 16 and 14 year-old sons. We play at the local community center 3 or 4 days per week. It costs us $530 per year for a membership but we easily get our money's worth.
These days my primary hobby is music. I acquire CDs as I find them, and as the years have passed, new acquisitions are getting harder to find because I either have them already, or they are out of print.
If you count the I-pod, Bose sound dock, plus a new laptop with a 5 channel Dell speaker system, and probably around 100 used CDs (averaging between $1 for most, up to around $7 each for a few) - I've spent close to $2000 since last October on music.
However, I've only paid for only about a dozen songs on I-tunes since then.
I'm a craft addict... Knitting, mosaic tiling, those clever marble magnets. For a while there, I think my hobby was more buying the stuff for a project rather than the actual project, but I have put myself on a purchasing hiatus in order to save money. I have plenty of accumulated "stash" to last me a while! At one point, I'd probably spend $40-50/week on yarn or other craft supplies.
Computer games. I buy them when they are at the end of their life and are available without the fancy boxes. I spend about $50 a decade.
I think my hobby is home improvement. I love to work on our house -- whether it's tearing out that 70's shag carpet and replacing it with slate, or installing a new faucet in the kitchen. I have to admit that I haven't added up how much money we spend on it -- it varies by the year but I think we are just about "done" now. Probably anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 for the stuff we do ourselves.
Newest hobby is golfing -- drop $12.50 in driving range balls every week. Otherwise most hobbies don't cost much.
My hobby is mountain biking. Other than maintenance the only real cost is gas to drive to the trail. I did buy some new biking clothes this year, but I really get the mileage out of them. My bike is four years old. The frame has a lifetime warranty, and was replaced last year after it developed a crack, with a better (carbon fiber) frame. I plan to ride this bike for a long, long itme.
My main hobby is racing cars. I budget about $2000/weekend, and I'm lucky if I stay within that limit.
I also play guitar, but this generates a net profit so it's not a hobby (at least not according to the IRS).
